Inmates on death row and serving life sentences at the Welikada and Dumbara prisons have commenced hunger strikes.
Prisons Media Spokesperson, Thushara Upuldeniya, said the inmates have launched the hunger strike demanding that their sentences be reduced.
Around two years ago, 247 inmates were pardoned on the recommendations of a special committee.
Thushara Upuldeniya said the special committee was investigating the current group of inmates as well, and noted that a decision will be taken based on the recommendations presented.
Over 300 prisoners have joined the hunger strike.
