Will the price of a domestic gas cylinder increase? There seems to be mixed signals in this regard from the government.

On Tuesday, The Island newspaper, citing government sources, reported that President Maithripala Sirisena and a majority of the cabinet ministers opposed a proposal by Minister Malik Samarawickrama to increase gas prices.

Releasing a statement in this regard, Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade said the proposal was submitted by the Cost of Living Committee chaired by Minister Malik Samarawickrama.

The statement went on to note that “The cabinet approved the price of Rs.1,431 per 12.5kg domestic cylinder and the Gazette notification will be issued by the Ministry of Industries and Commerce.”

However, during the cabinet media briefing held yesterday, this is what the Co-cabinet Spokesperson, Min. Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, had to say on this topic.
”..The Cost of Living Committee made a proposal. After this government came into power we reduced the price of LP gas eight times, this is over the past two years. Due to the exchange rate of the dollar, the Committee had some concerns. They requested a 10% increase. We discussed this and then we said we will consider it next year..”
