Today marks International Youth Day. The day is marked with a dedication towards celebrating the contribution of the youth in creating a better future, through peace-building and sustainability.
On December 17, 1999, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the recommendations made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth and declared August 12, as the International Youth Day.
The official event to celebrate the International Youth Day is set to be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, under the theme “Youth Building Peace”.
Speaking ahead of International Youth Day 2017, Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova said:
“Young people are essential for any lasting solution leading to peace. On International Youth Day, let us all unite – international actors, governments, civil society and educational institutions — to partner with young women and men to craft new paths together towards more peaceful societies”.
We must not forget that the younger generation is a key constituent in ensuring the success of both peace-keeping and peace-building efforts.
The process of social inclusion for youth, including participation in decision making, access to quality education, health care and basic services promotes their role as active contributors to society and affords young people with opportunities to reach their potential and achieve their goals.
Therefore, let us unite on the International Youth Day, with the future of our world who will one day become future leaders.
