Mattakkuliya youth shot dead (Updated)

The victim, a three-wheeler driver, sustained serious injuries in the shooting and died upon admission to the National Hospital in Colombo.

The victim has been identified as Gayan Jeewantha alias ‘Isuru’, a resident of Samithpura, Mattakkuliya and a father of two.

Police said the victim’s wife and eldest son were also in the three-wheeler at the time of the shooting but had sustained no injuries.

Police added that the victim was married to the daughter of an invdividual named ‘Gal Sampath’ who is serving a life sentence in prison for drug racketeering.

They added that the victim is also a relative of Roshan, the chief suspect in the murder of five people in Samithpura, Mattakkuliya.

The body of the victim has been placed at the National Hospital in Colombo, while the motive behind the shooting is yet to be ascertained.

The Magisterial inquest was conducted this afternoon.

Further investigations have been launched by the Mattakkuliya Police and another special police team to apprehend the suspects involved.

A 24-year-old was shot dead by gunmen on a motorcycle in Mattakkuliya on Monday morning.

Police said that the victim had been riding a three-wheeler in Jubilee Mawatha, in Mattakkuliya, when he was shot.

The individual, who was seriously injured following the shooting, was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police say that the wife and child of the victim had been travelling in the three wheeler at the time of the shooting, and added that they were not injured.

However, police say that the motive for the shooting has not been ascertained as yet, and investigations are underway by a special team including officers of the Mattakkuliya Police.
