The Malwatte and Asgiri Chapters of the Siam Sect have submitted a 21-point letter to President Sirisena calling to secure the powers of the President and ensure the authority of the Central Government, in the process of providing a political solution to the North and East.
The letter was presented to the President by the Lekadhikari Theras of both chapters at the President’s official residence in Kandy.
Ven. Dr. Medagama Sri Dhammananda Thera, Lekadhikari – Asgiri Chapter, Siam Sect:
”Although we hoped to meet the President in Colombo, he insisted on coming here to meet us. There were no other officials or diplomats in attendance. We hope that he will act based on our words”.
The 21 point letter bearing the signatures of the Lekadhikaris of both Chapters of the Siam Sect, requests that the Chief Prelates be informed of any proposed changes to the constitution.
Highlighting the need for a mixed electoral system to replace the existing system, the Chapters re-iterate their call to expedite the resettlement of displaced people, notwithstanding their race or religion.
The letter also reads that the chapters will continue to be mindful of the decision to grant Sri Lankan lands on long term leases.
The need to ensure wildlife conservation areas by bringing un-gazetted reserves under the purview of the Wildlife Department and the need to create awareness on the Reconciliation Council, its aims and proposed activities have also been highlighted in the letter.
The Chief Prelates have also called for the reform of school education following a national policy decision.
The Chief Prelates have also sought to turn the President’s attention towards concerns surrounding the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the Kandy city.
