Final rites for Most Venerable Davuldena Gnanissara Thera observed with full state honours

The mortal remains of the Late Chief Prelate of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Sect, Aggamaha Panditha Most Venerable Davuldena Gnanissara Thera who passed away on April 3, was cremated with full state honours on the evening of April 06.

The public paid their final respects to the Late Chief Prelate at the Sri Vidya Vijayarama Viharaya on Davuldena Gnanissara Mahanahimi Mawatha in Nugegoda.

The cortege departed for Independence Square in Colombo at 1 p.m. in the afternoon. While the cortege made its way to the Independence Square, floral tributes poured.

The cortege reached the Nelum Pokuna International Theatre via Pita Kotte, Rajagiriya and the D.S. Senanayake junction where it was entrusted to the tri-forces.

The cortege then proceeded to Independence Square with state honours.The final rites were observed at 03:30 p.m., led by the Chief Prelates of the three sects.

Dignitaries including President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe were in attendance.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Maha Bodhi Society issued a message of condolence on the passing of the Chief Prelate of the Amarapura Sect, Aggamaha Panditha Most Venerable Davuldena Gnanissara Thera.

The message issued by the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Maha Bodhi Society Venerable Banagala Upatissa Thera, states that the passing of Most Venerable Davuldena Gnanissara Thera has left a vacuum in society, considering his role as a leader for the Buddha Sasana and as an unparalleled educationist.

Furthermore, the message reads that the exemplary lifestyle of the Late Chief Prelate, was akin to a bridge, connecting the 20th and 21st centuries with the teachings of the Lord Buddha.

Recalling that all is uncertain as per the teachings of the Lord Buddha, the Sri Lanka Maha Bodhi Society concludes that all Buddhists must bear the passing of the Chief Prelate in this spirit.
