A Peruvian Airlines Boeing 737 passenger jet veered off the runway after landing, suffered the collapse of all gear and burst into flames coming to a stop after skidding on fire for some distance.
The jet had skidded off the runway at Francisco Carle Airport in Jauja – about 165 miles east of Lima. Peruvian Airlines said in a statement that the jet drove off the runway for unspecified reasons during the scheduled landing, after swerving to the right.
Miraculously, all 141 passengers were evacuated safely and the airline said in a statement that they escaped without “considerable injuries”.
The fire likely started when the wing scraped the runway, Interior Minister Carlos Basombrio said. “The plane couldn’t stop on the runway and they made a maneuver to stop it with the wing and that appears to have caused the fire,” Basombrio told reporters from a local network.
