Several arrests made in Welikada, Rajagiriya pre-dawn raids

Law enforcement authorities, on Sunday, conducted snap raids in several areas including Welikada and Rajagiriya.

Police had taken 18 suspects into custody in relation to a series of crimes, including several persons who had warrants for their arrest.

The snap raids were carried out from about 3:00 a.m. today to tackle individuals involved in criminal activity in the area including the brewing of illicit liquor and the illegal drug trade.

The operation was carried out by the Welikada and Rajagiriya Police Divisions, with the support of officers from the Negombo, Kelaniya, Colombo North and Gampaha Police divisions.

Police Special Task Force personnel also participated in the raids.

According to the police, 87 police officers and 50 STF personnel, searched about 300 homes and 140 vehicles. Police say they also seized stashes of illicit liqour, marijuana, heroin, equipment used in illegal activity and several vehicles.

Meanwhile, at the Katunayake airport customs officers apprehended a passenger from Pakistan in Saturday night. It is alleged that he was attempting to smuggle in 1.4 kilograms of heroin, concealed in his luggage.

Customs Spokesperson Dharmasena Kahadawa said the drugs have been valued at approximately Rs.14 million.
