Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad on Thursday (23) hit an Air India staff member with his slipper because his seat was changed. The airliner has lodged an FIR against the MP and has black-listed him for his unruly behaviour.
Gaikwad had booked a business class seat on a Pune to Delhi flight and was later informed about a change in fleet, resulting in his seat being converted to an economy seat.
“AI 852 coming from Pune arrived at 0950hrs had one incident with Mr Ravindra Gaikwad, MP Shiv Sena. It is learnt that he (Gaikwad) was annoyed due to non-availability of a business class seat and refused to de-board at IGI,” said a statement by AI.
Refusing to get out of the aircraft, Gaikwad created a massive ruckus. He then hit the duty manager twenty-five times with his slipper, as said by the MP himself.
“Haan maine usko maara tha, usne badtameezi ki thi (Yes, I hit him, he misbehaved),” said the Shiv Sena MP, boasting about the attack. “I hit him with my slipper 25 times. Did you hear the way he was speaking with me? I am from the Shiv Sena, I am not from the BJP to tolerate abuses.”
After his brazen statement to the media, the party has put a gag order on the MP. Ravindra Gaikwad has been told to stay away from the media after he tried justifying the attack. Shiv Sena Chief Uddav Thackeray has sought an explanation from Gaikwad for his statement and has sought a reply from him immediately.
Air India has filed a complaint with the Delhi police against Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad for hitting an AI staffer with slippers.
“An FIR has been lodged by Air India in this incident. Air India is also examining the creation of no-fly list of unruly passengers on the lines of other carriers,” a statement by Air India said.
The Air India duty manager Shivkumar, who was assaulted by Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad, said he had never expected such a thing to happen.
“He misbehaved with me, he even broke my glasses. I never expected this could happen… God save our country if this is the culture and behaviour of our MPs,” Shivkumar said.
The 60-year-old staffer has lodged a complaint against the law-maker, stating that the MP abused him, ripped off his sweater buttons, broke his spectacles, beat him with sandals and humiliated him in front of the flight crew.
Condemning the attack on the AI staff member, civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju said no political party will endorse such an act.
“Any citizen hitting an airline staffer doesn’t make any sense… No political party will encourage physical assault. It should never have happened,” Raju said. (TimesNow)
