The JVP has revealed that US and Sri Lankan defence ministries have signed a joint agreement
Making a statement at a media briefing convened by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna on Sunday, the party’s General Secretary said that this agreement would ensure the providing of facilities during times of war in either country
He added that there is an issue with the agreement which calls for renewal for another ten years – and the previous administration signed the agreement without informing the people or the cabinet.
According to the JVP, the agreement will be signed again instead of being annulled, and extending this agreement must not be allowed because it harms the sovereignty of the country and does not give any benefit to the country, they opined.
When News1st made inquiries, Acting Defence Secretary Kingsley Fernando pointed out that while talks are underway between Sri Lanka and America on this defence agreement, a final decision has not been reached.
