A demonstration was held in Colombo today to protest the gazette notification on the usage of full -face helmets by motorcyclists.
The demonstration, organised by the All Island Motorcyclists Association, commenced at the Galle Face Green.
The gazette notification containing rules to be followed by motorcyclists when using full face helmets, was issued on the night of February 23, bearing the signature of Transport Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
According to the gazette, any person riding a motorcycle must wear a protective helmet at all times.
While a chin strap must be fastened for safety purposes, the visor of the helmet must be transparent and cannot be tinted or coloured in any way.
The gazette notification also says that the helmet must not distort or hide the face of the rider in any way and that 90 percent of the helmet should be in a single colour.
According to the All Island Motorcyclists’ Association the Attorney General promised in the Court of Appeal that the use of full face helmets would be allowed but a ‘90% rule’ has been brought forward and a substandard SLS certificate are putting motorcyclists across the country in difficulty.
“They are suppressing the use of full face helmets through this. Our association is aware of what is going on. We call on the police not to write tickets for those using full face helmets.” Secretary,Chirantha Amarasinghe.
The protesters signed a petition during the demonstration and then proceeded towards the Presidential Secretariat.
Several protesters were allowed to enter the Presidential Secretariat.
Assistant Secretary to the President Chathura Liyanagunawardena met with the protesters and noted that he would work to grant them an audience by Wednesday.
Secretary Chirantha Amarasinghe said that a countrywide demonstration will take plac if talks are not granted by Wednesday, with regard to the gazette notification,
