Special committee commences investigations into Kalutara shooting

A committee appointed by the Minister of Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation to look into the shooting that was carried out on a prison bus in Kalutara on Februar 27,, has commenced its investigations.

Chairman of the committee Rumy Marzook said that the members of the committee held discussions with the secretary of the Ministry in this regard on Tuesday.

The purpose of the committee is to provide recommendations on tightening security while prisoners are being transported, in order to prevent such incidents in the future.

The committee is scheduled to reconvene on March 5.

Five inmates, including underworld figure Aruna Udayantha alias “Samayan”, as well as two prisons officers were killed in the shooting that was carried out on a prison bus in Malwatte, Kalutara.

Meanwhile, the van believed to have been used by the gunmen to flee after carrying out the shooting, was found abandoned in the Moragahahena area yesterday. Police said that 25 fingerprints were identified from the van.
