Colombo Port oil pipeline leak discovered during repairs

A leak was reported in an oil pipeline that extends from the Colombo Port to Kolonnawa

The leak was reported at a time when the pipeline was being repaired at four different locations.The pipeline begins at the Colombo Port, however the mechanical engineers association notes that they were able to prevent oil leaking into the ocean.

According to officials, the leak was detected about ten minutes after operatinos commenced.

“We stopped the ship immediately and began repair work. We were able to stop the oil leaking into the ocean by blocking the drains ..” said D.R.G. Bopearachchi of the Mechanical Engineer’s Association.

Minister of Petroleum Resources Development, Chandima Weerakkody noted that repair work on the pipeline began immediately after the leak was detected.

There were four specific location where workers could not renovate so the assistance of international experts were sought.

He also added that tenders have been called to re-lay the main pipeline, it will happen within a month and that s shipment was unloaded today in order to use the stock up fuel for possible drought.

He noted that the leak did not cause a major issue

“We are restoring pipelines that have been neglected for over 50 years”, he said.
