The Sri Lanka Freedom Party charges that the former CBSL governor Arjun Mahendran should be in jail.
Ministry of Science,Technology and Research, Susil Premajayantha explained that it is the president who appointed the commission and if a president’s commission is appointed, generally the evidence can be presented through affidavits, and the evidence can then be presented in court for a civil or criminal case. But the COPE report cannot be used in that manner and thus cannot be used in a court case.
“We have seen a number of criminal cases. The cases get dismissed from the preliminary objection itself. Or there is a fault in the charge sheet. There are technical errors. What If that happens to this? We can think that way when we saw the challenges that the Chairman of COPE and the Auditor General’Secretary Department had to face in the recent past. Whose money is this?” charged the minister.
He added that this is the money of the government and the allegation for misusing government funds comes under the public property act and if that was done, Arjuna Mahendran should be in Jail.
Media Spokesperson for the SLFP,State Minister Dilan Perera said that if an independent commission appointed IGP then the work will happen and the current IGP was appointed by an independent commission but even though he has been appointed that way he is still resorting to old techniques – and you cannot work with those old techniques.
“From a glance you can see who wants to protect Arjuna Mahendran. It is clear”,charged Minister Premajayantha.
