Questions were raised in Parliament, if the former Governor of Central Bank hold any positions in the current government.
Minister of Science, Technology and Research Susil Premajayantha, during the debate in parliament on January 24, 2017, said that the decision made by the President to not appoint the former Central bank Governor to a position in the government when considering the incidents surrounding the Central Bank, was the right decision to make, and the SLFP will not agree with the government if the former governor remains to be a consultant.
JVP Parliamentarian Bimal Rathnayake : Does Arjuna Mahendran hold any position in the Central Bank, Finance Ministry or the Government?
Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade,Malik Samarawickrama : He does not hold any positions.
Bimal Rathnayake : Then how does he attend the meetings where important discussions about the country’s economy are conducted? Do you invite him?
Malik Samarawickrama – He has not attended any event that I have attended so far.
JVP Parliamentarian Bimal Rathnayake : He comes to every meeting with the Prime Minister, doesn’t he?
Malik Samarawickrama – No, he does not.
Meanwhile, issuing a communique, the Ministry of Finance stated that the Former Governor of Central Bank Arjuna Mahendran has not engaged in any activities in the ministry.
However, during the recent past, on numerous occasions, the former governor of the Central Bank attended many overseas visits and meetings with Prime Minster Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Press releases issued by the Prime Minister’s office have also mentioned his position on several occasions.
