During a press briefing in Galle today, former chairman of the Lanka Coal Company, Attorney- at-law Maithri Gunaratne exposed details of a controversial deal struck by the Lanka Coal Company

According to the former chairman, a long term tender has been called for a period of three years.

“If I continued to remain in this position for much longer, the secretary of the company can’t commit all the fraud he is upto now. That is the reason why they made their first attempt to get rid of me for good”, he said

He charged that the Secretary of the subject ministry Suren Batagoda and the rest of the Tender Committee are all at fault and the wrong decision was put forth by the minster to the cabinet -and then misleading the cabinet while they put the same bill requesting to grant the same contract to the same company for a second time.

He added that the Chief Justice at the Supreme Court had issued a verdict saying that granting of the contract to that company in question is illegitimate , however they went ahead despite the verdict

“What we are asking the president to do, is to remove the secretary and the tender committee immediately before they present the tender and carry out this theft once again”,  he said.
