President vows to enhance provisions for research in plantations, health, fisheries

President Maithripala Sirisena says provisions for research in the fields of plantations , health and fisheries will be enhanced.

PRES2Speaking at an event held to mark 92 years since the establishment of the Tea Research Institute of Sri Lanka in Talawakelle he said that the sector and the issues faced are very complex. Inaugurated in 1925 – the Talawakelle Tea Research Institute is considered as the second oldest tea research institute in the world.

“When it comes to the plantations sector , there are political issues, there are economical issues,social issues and health issues. It is extremely complex. However, as a government,we are providing solutions to these issues, ” he said.

According to the president priority is being given to programmes that will uplift the living standards of the poor in the hill country …”

The president also commented on an incident that he had to face en route to the event.

When the aircraft I was travelling in from Colombo made a stop in Kotapola , I spoke to the people in the area. I asked the children of the shortcomings that they face,  said the President who pointed out that the people lamented over the lack of an ambulance for the hospital. They were told that one would be dispatched in the coming days.

 

The President also said that he will inquire from the relevant MP’s and minister to take the necessary measures since they receive water only twice a day

Minister Navin Dissanayake also addressed the gathering stating that the President Sirisena stood firm as a leader and did not pursue political power

“You came forward to create a certain political culture in the country. I was with you. I told you come forward without any fear and that we are with you.”

According to the Minister 75% of the population in the Nuwara Eliya District voted in favor of President Sirisena

The President opened the information center at the Institute today.
