The ‘Gajasamaragama’ model village constructed under the Uda Gammana programme was declared open on Thursday January 12.The ‘Gajasamaragama’ model village which consists of 70 houses has been constructed in the Weligaththe area in Lunugamvehera, Tissamaharama.

The construction of the model village was spearheaded by Subject Minister Sajith Premadasa under the National Housing Development Authority’s low interest housing loan scheme.

The opening ceremony of the village held under the auspices of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also corresponded with Minister Sajith Premadasa’s 50th birthday.

Born in 1967, Sajith Premadasa was the first born son of Sri Lanka’s second Executive President Ranasinghe Premadasa.Sajith Premadasa was first elected to Parliament in the year 2000.

Having received a public mandate in the United National Party (UNP) at several occasions, Sajith Premadasa continued the welfare programmes initiated by his father, while serving both in the ruling party and the opposition.

After taking on the role of Minister of Housing and Construction, following the establishment of the incumbent government, he initiated a programme to broaden his father’s housing concept and carry it forward.

Under this programme, Sajith Premadasa revitalised the Uda Gammanaya concept and commenced the construction of 244 such model villages.Last year alone, 106,000 people benefited under this housing programme.

Celebrating his 50th birthday, the model village which was declared open today, was named ‘Gajasamarama’ for the United National Party’s 70th anniversary.
