The Met Department says that the Cyclonic Storm Vardah is making its way across the Bay of Bengal, 400 kilometres northeast, off the coast of Kankesanthurai, and is moving towards India.
The department says, Sri Lanka will not be directly affected by the cyclone, but states that due to the weather system, sea waves could rise to a height of between 1-2 meters in the Gulf of Mannar and in the seas close to the coast of Kankesanthurai.
The cyclone is predicted to make landfall in Chennai, on Monday evening.
