A 7.4 magnitude earthquake off north-eastern Japan near Fukushima prefecture has prompted a tsunami warning of possible 3m (10ft) waves.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres (six miles). It warned people along the coast to move to higher ground.

The depth of the quake was estimated to be around 25km (15.5 miles).

Fukushima is north of Tokyo and home to the nuclear power plant that was destroyed by a huge tsunami following an offshore earthquake in 2011.

Meanwhile in the latest developments The Meteorological Agency has downgraded the tsunami warning to an advisory for the coastal areas of Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures in northeastern Japan. But the agency is calling on people to stay cautious.
