A total of 17 people died and 37 others were injured after 56 vehicles piled up on a Beijing-Kunming expressway in north China’s Shanxi Province on Monday.
The accident occurred at 09:00 Monday due to snow and rainy weather. The 37 injured are now in stable condition after receiving treatment, according to local authorities on Tuesday morning.
“The injured came in at 11:15 p.m. There were eleven of them in the first batch. Most of them received injuries to the face and suffered from minor fractures to their limbs,” said Rong Mingsheng, a doctor from Yuxian County People’s Hospital.
“The patients are in a relatively stable condition; they are not in a life-threatening condition. But we are monitoring them closely. The hospital is paying for their medicine, treatments and living expenditures for the moment,” Rong added.
Local police, firefighters, doctors and officials were involved in the rescue operation.
Investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
