President Barack Obama, in a opinion article to the CNN, has noted that the US will work with private firms to send humans to Mars by 2030.

“We have set a clear goal vital to the next chapter of America’s story in space: sending humans to Mars by the 2030s and returning them safely to Earth” he said

President Obama expressed his goals to reach the Red Planet back in 2010, however the presidents goals of reaching Mars have been criticized, particularly by Congress.

Mr.Obama’s fascination with space was highlighted in his article to CNN where he commended the efforts by NASA

“We’ve flown by every planet in the solar system — something no other nation can say. And we continue to drive down the cost of space exploration for taxpayers.” he said

He added that last year alone NASA discovered flowing water on Mars and evidence of ice on one of Jupiter’s moons, and mapped Pluto which is more than 3 billion miles away, in high-resolution.

He also added that space telescopes have revealed additional Earth-like planets orbiting distant stars while new missions to interact with asteroids are being pursued, which will help learn how to protect the Earth from the threat of colliding with one while also teaching about the origins of life on Earth.

He went on to add that more than 1,000 companies across nearly all 50 states in the US are working on private space initiatives

imageObama has not been alone with his vision, and just last month Elon Musk, who founded SpaceX, outlined his proposal for a permanent base on Earth’s neighbor.

There have been mixed reaction to Elon Musk’s plans with some space experts criticizing the plan as unrealistic, while others praise for outlining a detailed – and audacious – architecture for getting to Mars.

“I still have the same sense of wonder about our space program that I did as a child. It represents an essential part of our character — curiosity and exploration, innovation and ingenuity, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and doing it before anybody else”
