World Mental Health Day is commemorated today. The theme of this year covers “psychological first aid”.
The Day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.
Director of the Mental Health Division at the Ministry of Health, Dr Chirtramali De Silva, has said that special attention will be psychological first aid.
Meanwhile, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, 25% of Sri Lanka’s population suffers from mental illnesses.
Consultant Psychiatrist at the National Institute of Mental Health, Dr. Jayan Mendis added that the level of mental illness has increased owing to the 30-year long war the country was faced with.
