A person was killed when a three-wheeler collided with a train at a railway crossing in the Maraluwawa area in Kurunegala on Monday.
The rail-gate operator had not been present to man the gate at the time of the accident.
The incident occurred at around 2 p.m. when the three-wheeler collided with an express train plying from Colombo to Kankesanthurai. Two children who were returning home from school in the three-wheeler, were injured in the accident.
The victim who died in the accident is a 34 year old male from the Thorayaya area in Kurunegala.
The News 1st correspondent stated, although a railway guard room and a rail-gate is in place at the level crossing, the rail-gate had not functioned at the time of the accident.
A Samurdhi officer was also killed in a motorcycle accident at the same location on March 22, 2016.
