President, Maithripala Sirisena declared open a three-storey Dhamma Hall at the historic Godagandeniya Kurukudaya Temple in Peradeniya.

Following the ceremony to declare open the building, the Mahanayake of the Asgiri Chapter, Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thero placed the foundation stone for the construction of a Chaithya.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Sirisena said that SL have been accepted globally for being a Buddhist country, following the teachings of the Theravada Buddhism.

“The issue surrounding the Vihara Devalagam Bill arose seven or eight months ago”, added President Sirisena. “We have presented this for further discussions with the Mahanayakes of the Three-Sects and the Maha Sangha.”

He went on to note that after obtaining advice, it was to be presented to parliament once again on the evening of October 4.

“However, with the situation that arose, I advised the minister of Buddha Sasana to postpone this and discuss any pending issues. We must always act in a manner where there will be no divisions among the Maha Sangha -and always operate having their blessings …”, said President Sirisena.
