Over 2000 individuals to be taken to court over alleged “mosquito breeding”

The Ministry of Health says that cases will be filed against 2195 individuals who maintained environments conducive for the breeding of mosquitoes.

The individuals were apprehended during raids carried out during the recently concluded National Dengue Eradication Week.

According to the National Dengue Eradication Programme, 624,680 locations were subject to inspections during the National Dengue Eradication Week. 9130 locations conducive for the breeding of mosquitoes were discovered during the inspections.

The Ministry noted that while steps have been taken to clean up 98,118 locations where mosquito larvae could breed, notices were issued to 28,314 individuals who allegedly maintained such environments.

The Ministry further noted that cases have been filed against 729 individuals in the Colombo district alone, adding that high risk areas for the breeding of mosquito’s existed in the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, Ratnapura, Batticaloa and Jaffna.
