Farmlands in Polonnaruwa have been damaged by wild elephants who have been driven towards human settlements as a result of the dry weather. Residents claim that wild elephants are encroaching on villages in Polonnaruwa with increasing frequency due to the dry weather conditions.

Farmers have been severely inconvenienced by elephants trampling through farmland in the Nikahena area in Medirigiriya. Our reporter says that such incidents are most frequently witnessed in villages bordering forest reserves.

About 40 families have been affected by wild elephant incursions. Residents say that more and more wild elephants are encroaching on villages as the Nikahena reservoir has dried up.
