A woman who allegedly tortured a child in the Neervely area in Jaffna was placed under remand custody, after being produced before the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court.

The woman was arrested after a complaint was lodged by the National Child Protection Authority after inspecting a video of the incident that is circulating on social media

The video was released to the internet by a provincial journalist, who saw a child being hit with a knife by her stepmother. The child in the video is only six years of age.

The woman was the third wife of the child’s father. Two children in addition to the child in the video were taken into police custody and were placed at the SOS Children’s village in Nayanmarkatta.
