UNGA 71st sessions to commence today

The 71 st sessions of the United Nations General Assembly is scheduled to commence today.

According to our Bureau correspondent in New York, Newsfirst’s Shameer Rasooldeen, the sessions will begin at 6 p.m. Sri Lankan time.

The President is scheduled t’o address the UN General assembly on the afternoon of September 21.

The presidents delegation includes Ministers Gayantha Karunathilaka., Faizer Musthapha Arjuna Ranatunga and Managala Samaraweera

He is also scheduled to speak at the high-level event on Open Government Partnership with several leading nations to be held at the UN Headquarters today.

He will also meet several leaders for discussions on bilateral relations and international issues.

The President is scheduled to hold high level discussions with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, US Secretary of State John Kerry, Indian Minister of State for External Affairs, M J Akbar, Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and chairman of World Economic Forum Chairman Prof Klaus Schwab on the sidelines of the visit.

President Sirisena will also interact with global leaders at the reception host by US President Barack Obama and at the reception and luncheon host by UNSG Ban Ki-moon.
