Final rites were observed on Monday, September 19, for the man who died in his cell while in the custody of the Pussellawa Police.
The funeral was held at the Public Cemetery of the Rockland Estate.
According to Police, the 30-year-old Kaviraj Ravichandran hung himself in his cell on September 17, several hours after he was arrested.
The family of the deceased staged a protest on September 18 claiming that the death was caused by police brutality. While a demonstration had also been planned during the funeral, a court order was issued preventing such a protest.
According to the post-mortem examination conducted by the Judicial Medical Officer at the Peradeniya Hospital, there are signs that the deceased may have hung himself.
The JMO has also ordered that parts of the victim’s body be sent to the Government Analyst for further investigations.
