The 86th edition of the Sir John Tarbet School Athletic Championship 2016, which commenced in Diyagama on Tuesday , saw three meet records being shattered.

The oldest athletics championships in the country, the Sir John Tarbet School Athletic Championships, was inaugurated in 1920.

The championships are held under two categories, namely junior and senior. The senior category events commenced on Tuesday.

Over 3200 sportsmen and women ranging from 16 to 20 years of age are taking part in the championships this year. Meet records in the Under 18 Boys Pole Vault, Long Jump and the Under 20 Discus throw were broken today.

Napthali Joyson of Arunodaya Vidyalaya in Jaffna renewed his pole value record today.
