Efforts are continuing to control the fire that is spreading in the Gonadeniya Forest Reserve in the Hambantota district.

The fire that began in the Gonadeniya – Walasmulla Reserve on the September 10 is still ablaze.

Residents, together with the Sri Lanka Air Force, battled to douse the inferno. Meanwhile, the fire that erupted in the Wewaihala Kanda Forest Reserve in Polpithigama, in the Kurunegala district on Sunday night destroyed over ten acres of forest.

However, the fires were doused by Monday evening.

Another forest fire that erupted in the Victoria Reserve on Monday morning, continued until Monday night.

The Disaster Management Centre said that a programme will be implemented soon to educate locals on controlling forest fires.

Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that the programme would be conducted together with the Wildlife Department.
