An event to mark the 150th Police Day will be held on Saturday evening, under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan and Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara, ministers, parliamentarians and high-ranking police officers are due to participate in this event.
A stable police service was established in Sri Lanka on September 3, 1866. William Robert Campbell held office as the first Inspector General of Police.
At the time, 585 police officers operated at 47 police stations. The country presently employees over 84,000 police officers.
