President Obama has cut short the sentences of 111 federal inmates for those convicted of nonviolent drug offenses.
Mr.Obama has been an advocate for phasing out strict sentences for drug convictions. He argues that strict sentencing lead to excessive punishment and incarceration rates unseen in other developed countries.
Ealier this month President Obama granted commutation to 214 federal inmates (the most commutations granted in a single day by any President in the US). The 111 brings the tally to 325 people in the month of August alone
