The member of the Army Intelligence Unit,  who allegedly assaulted senior journalist Upali Tennekoon, was identified during an identification parade held on Friday.

The suspect was identified by Upali Tennekoon and his wife. Gampaha Additional Magistrate, Lalith Kannangara, ordered that the suspect be further remanded until August 29. The suspect is also wanted in connection with the assassination of veteran journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge.

Senior journalist Upali Tennekoon stated that the assault took place in 2009. However, no action was taken before, and now fresh investigations have commenced.

“The CID has made a request asking me to help in the investigations. That is why I came here”, said Upali Tennekoon

Upali Tennekoon was assaulted on January 23,  2009 in Imbulgoda, Gampaha.

A group who arrived on two motor-cycles had carried out the assault on Tennekoon and his wife. The vehicle the couple were travelling in was also was also damaged in the attack.
