The Ministry of Health says a quarter of Sri Lankans are overweight, while nearly 7% are obese.
According to Minister Rajitha Senaratne, 10,000 deaths are reported annually due to diabetes- related complications, which 8% of the population suffers from.
He noted there has been an increase in diabetes among younger individuals. Diabetes was identified only among the elderly population in the past.
The minister stressed the need for tough steps to control the Non Communicable Diseases (NCD) or Life-style Related Disease (ISRD).
The Ministry of Health has already started awareness programmes to this effect to motivate public to take precautionary actions, open Suwadivi centres, and conduct Suwanari clinics in country-wide government hospitals.
