Speaking at the end of mission press conference of her first official visit to Sri Lanka, Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova commended President Maithripala Sirisena for the progress made in the country.
She added that the most important now, in terms of political agenda of the country is the peace process, the reconciliation of the country and everything that is linked to overcoming the conflict of the past, healing the wounds on the basis of respect for human rights, on the basis of respect for diversity and looking forward for the future.
” We touched upon today with the President, I commended him for the access to information act, which is something, from the point of UNESCO also extremely important – and working with journalists, freedom of expressions, media developments. And in the work on the new constitution, the president reassured me that this will be very strongly part of what they are looking for”, added the Director General of UNESCO.
