The fire which ignited at the Rockhill Reserve in Ella on Wednesday continues to rage on.
According to our correspondent, the land area destroyed in the fire has not been ascertained as yet. Efforts made by officials of the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the police, residents and disaster management officials to contain the fire which broke out last evening were unsuccessful.
Our correspondent said the blaze is spreading towards the Rawana Falls.
The fire which has destroyed a large of swathe of land in the reserve, has also claimed a large portion of wildlife.
Meanwhile, nearly two acres of land was destroyed in a fire which broke out early Thursday morning in the lower area of the Giritale Tank in Polonnaruwa.
Residents say the fire spread rapidly due to the prevailing dry weather conditions and strong winds.
The fire was contained following a two-hour operation conducted by personnel of the School of Military Police in Giritale, the Rescue and Fire Fighting Mission of the Sri Lanka Air Force and Fire Unit of the Thamankaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha.
