Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova arrived in the country on her first official visit to Sri Lanka. The Director General, who arrived Saturday night, will tour the country until August 17.

Irina Bokova, who took office in 2009, is the first woman to be appointed as the Director General of UNESCO. She is scheduled to give a lecture on Soft Power for Peace and Development on Tuesday in Colombo.

The Director General and her delegation also visited Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa on Sunday. She is also scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with President Maithripala Sirisena, and several ministers, during her stay.

The Director General pointed out that Sri Lanka has eight sites of the world heritage list, all equally very relevant and showing the rich history, the long history – and that for UNESCO, it is very important to protect and preserve it, to pass it to the new generation.

“We do believe that cultural heritage can play a huge important role in this process”, she said further added that Sri Lanka is in the path of reconciliation of development of peace.
