Various views are being expressed by the ruling party on the future of the Mattala Airport and Hambantota Port. State Minister Sujeewa Senasinghe elaborated on this matter during a meeting with representatives of the ‘Jathika Dumriya Sewa Samithiya’.
He noted that Hambantota Port and the Mattala Airport incur losses of 1.5 billion a year. They have entered into an entered into a public private partnership because the government will go bankrupt if they hold on.
He added that the Chinese government has promised to exempt the debt to a certain extent in order to save them from the debt trap. Therefore an interest rate of 7% is given which they attempt to bring down to 2%.
He went on to note that they have worked for UNP and stayed at the receiving end of political revenge. But those in the SLFP have been the subject of political revenge.
