According to the National Cancer Control Programme, about 2500 cases of oral cancer are reported in the country every year. Director of the Programme, Dr. Sudath Samaraweera stated that six cases of oral cancer are reported every day.

He added that the appearance of white or red or red and white spots within the oral cavity are primary symptoms of the cancer.Dr. Sudath Samaraweera added that chewing on betel leaves and and consuming alcohol increases the risk of oral cancer.
