Health Minister announces new move over taxes for tobacco

Minister of Health , Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, at an awareness programme in Colombo on cancers of the head and neck, announced that the cabinet bill on increasing the taxes on tobacco to 90 percent has been signed.

Minister of Health Dr. Rajitha Senaratne stated that 100 billion have been raised in taxes from tobacco companies, however 147 billion is spent on treating patients who suffer from diseases related to smoking.

He added that a cabinet bill was signed by the Minister of Health himself, proposing a 90% tax increase as well as a 15% increase in VAT.

“If VAT is imposed on the essentials of the innocent people, why can’t they impose 15 percent VAT on tobacco.?”questioned the Health Minster who further noted that the Minister of Finance and the Finance Ministry officials have been summoned for a meeting on Tuesday.

The Minster of Health also called for a ban on the importation of all Areca nut.
