At a media briefing held in Colombo, Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena stated that party secretary’s have been given the power to take disciplinary action against those who do not accept the party leadership. The focus of the media briefing was the SLFP central committee decisions made at a meeting held on Thursday.

State Minister of Finance Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena stated that President Maithripala Sirisena took a number of decisions as the leader of the party and one of them was to quickly commence organisational activities.

He added that the president had, through a letter, appointed co-district leaders to carry out organisational activities from August 6 to  31, and what this co-leadership means is that, apart from the SLFP leadership in the districts, the president has also appointed a separate district group to hold a party convention which will take place on September 4.

State Minister of Finance, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena further added:

Even now there is space for this party to work together without splitting apart. But if there is anyone who does not accept the leadership of the SLFP, it is a disciplinary issue. And the party should take the necessary steps and the central working committee vested the powers of initiating disciplinary action with the general secretary of the party.
