PM Wickremesinghe holds bilateral talks with Indonesian President

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is currently on an official tour to Indonesia,  held bilateral discussions with the country’s President, Joko Widodo on Wednesday August 3.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe met with President Widodo at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, which is one of the six presidential palaces in Indonesia.

During the meeting,  the Indonesian President has emphasised the need to strengthen cultural, trade, political and religious ties between the two countries to meet the current challenges.

President Widodo noted that he had extended an invitation to President Maithripala Sirisena to visit Indonesia during the G7 summit in Japan. Thereby, the Indonesian President had said that he is anticipating the Sri Lankan President’s visit.

In response, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had noted that President Sirisena is scheduled to visit Indonesia next year.Attention was also drawn towards the importance of organising a bilateral trade summit.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also met with Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Wiranto.

A communique issued by the Prime Minister’s office said that the meeting focussed on the importance on the need to hold close talks between the two countries to draw up a collective plan on formulating new mechanisms to tackle the human-elephant conflict and the eradication of drugs.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinhe and his delegation also met with the Finance Minister of Indonesia Sri Mulyani Indrawati.
