What would you, the people living in developed urban areas, do if there was an ant in this glass water? Chances are you will throw it away than continue to drink it because you can afford to do so…
The People of Kiwulegama have been left with the despair of consuming brackish water, not for one, not two, but for over 80 years.
Over 80 years…. not a small time. Not a small period. This village of over 80 families consumed the brackish water for a period of time which for some -more or less- their entire lifetime and as expected, the water has resulted in kidney diseases running rampant among the community.
We at News 1st, through the Gammadda 100 day initiative, took the first steps today, Thursday, July 28, to give these people the simple gift of clean drinking water.
In the days to come, the people of Kiwulegama will receive water from a well which will be directed through a filtration unit and into a filter.
Filled with emotion, the people of Kiwulegama made a pledge before the sacred Bo Tree. Their innocent pledge was that they will soon be able to cleanse the Bo tree with clean water, instead of the brackish water they have been using over the decades.
“Gammedda Saviya” is a community organisation which was established today with the aim of extending public support to successfully implement the Gammedda 100-day initiative. The organisations are tasked with implementing selected projects and focus on their maintenance.
The community organisations are being established with the participation of locals in areas where projects are being initiated.
The Gammedda Saviya Community Organisation began its operations with the commencement of the Kiwulegama Project today.
