The body of a boy was found on the night July 26 inside an abandoned well in Kobithaduwa, Batapola. The deceased is said to be the lover of the girl who was knocked down by a Rabbukkana-bound train on Saturday, July 23 which was plying along the Ambalangoda – Balapitiya railway.
The young man was reported missing after the train accident which claimed the life of his 16-year-old girlfriend around 10:40 a.m. on Saturday. The incident was recorded on CCTV cameras fixed at a nearby house, which showed the young girl running towards the railway.
Speaking to media, the brother of the deceased girl said that he saw his sister in a brawl while he was on a train which passed the location of the incident. “I saw my sister engaged in a brawl with someone. I wanted to jump off the train but I didn’t”, said the brother of the deceased girl.
He added that he saw the guy his sister was engaged in a brawl with push her to the train – when he came running from the Ambalangoda town. He said, “I held him by his collar, he then pushed me aside and fled. I ran to my sister I saw that she was dead. Seeing her I fainted”.
However, the brother of the deceased girl had provided a statement to the police saying the statement he gave to the media following the incident was false.
Based on their investigation, police say the incident had transpired following an argument between the couple and the brother. In his second statement to the police, the brother has revealed that his sister jumped on to the train and committed suicide.
While the remains of the young girl was placed at her residence in Godahena, Amabangoda, the body of the seventeen-year-old partner was discovered on Monday evening. His body was discovered in an abandoned well (around 10ft in depth ) located 500m away from his residence.
The magisterial inquest into the youth’s murder was carried out on Monday July 25 by the Chief Magistrate of Balapitiya. The remains were transferred to the Karapitya Teaching hospital to conduct the post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, the final rites of the young girl is due to be conducted on Wednesday, July 27 following an open court decision.
