A group demanding drinking water staged a demonstration obstructing the Matara – Kataragama main road on Monday morning. The demonstrators said that their farmlands are nourished from the Ridiyagama Reservoir.

Locals of the Godakokgala and Liyangastota Grama Sewa Divisions, which are situated in close proximity to the Ridiyagama Reservoir, staged the demonstration requesting for a solution to their drinking water crisis.

They charge even though the Ridiyagama Reservoir supplies water to several villages through the Ruhunupura Water Supply Scheme, their villages, which are located closest to the reservoir, do not receive the due benefits.

A group of demonstrators who were protesting close to the Ridiyagama Reservoir attempted to close a few sluice gates of the reservoir. A demonstrator noted that they not been able to get a single drop of water for a week since the two motors of the rural water scheme malfunctioned.

The demonstrators who made their way to the Ambalantota Town, continued their protest while obstructing the Matara – Kataragama main road from 10 a.m.  to around 2.30 p.m.

Later in the afternoon, a group of demonstrators met and held discussions on the issue with the Ambalantota Divisional Secretary.
