Former Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan’s new role as a spin consultant for the Australian national cricket team has attracted much debate among many Sri Lankans.

Speaking to Sports 1st, Muralitharan said that he has taken up the role of spin consultant only until the commencement of the series between Australia and Sri Lanka.

“I was asked just 3 months ago if I could take up the job. But I said that I could do it for just 10 days and that I could not be present for the matches since I cannot be in the opposition dressing room (against Sri Lanka). I said I cannot coach during the matches. However I said I could coach for the preparation ahead of matches.”

Meanwhile, the President of SLC Thilanga Sumathipala says that the situation is an issue concerning nationalism and ethics.

“We have named this series as the Warne – Murali Trophy. So as an opportunity for both the countries we have named Murali as a stakeholder of this trophy. So the fact that he is coaching the opposition team for a game played at his hometown in Sri Lanka is an issue for Murali himself. Leaving aside professionalism, from our perspective we have a heavy heart on this matter.”

Murali also alleged that Sri Lanka cricket hires every coach from overseas instead of giving the required place for the coaches in Sri Lanka. The spin legend also said, “If I can make the Australian team victorious after coaching them for just 10 days, then I suppose I am the best coach in the world.”

He also reminded us a bit from the past where he stood for Sri Lanka outside of the sport, when the British Prime Minister had a misconception about the country.

The spin wizard also said, “I am not doing this against Sri Lanka. I just thought that is was a good opportunity. Because they were the ones who accused me for chucking in 1995 and 1999. They themselves now want me to coach them. So I think that even they admit that what they did was wrong. I took the opportunity they gave me to prove this.”
