Animal welfare campaigners are trying to free a polar bear that’s being kept in a shopping centre in China.

He’s called Pizza and has been dubbed the “world’s saddest polar bear” after videos emerged of him slumped on the floor of his enclosure.

The video, posted in March but going viral now, shows the polar bear in a deplorable condition, lying helplessly in a stark blue display. The polar bear is among several other animals at the mall’s Grandview Aquarium in Guangzhou, China, confined there just so visitors can take pictures.

Animal Asia, a charity that rescues and cares for endangered species, shared the video urging people to sign an online petition to close the aquarium.

“This polar bear needs all our help. We must end this. We are all absolutely distraught for this poor sad animal. A shopping mall is no place for this,” it says on Facebook.

Almost 400,000 people have signed a petition to close the “ocean theme park” at the Grandview Centre in Guangzhou.

It is also home to beluga whales, walrus calves, a wolf and arctic foxes.
