A sergeant attached to the Intelligence Unit of the Sri Lanka Army, who allegedly kidnapped the driver of veteran journalist Lasantha Wickremetunge has been arrested.
The suspect was arrested in the Mount Lavinia area by the Criminal Investigations Department on Friday evening.
The suspect was produced before Mount Lavinia Magistrate Mohammed Sahabdeen on Saturday afternoon. Allegations were raised against the suspect for kidnapping the driver of late Lasantha Wickremetunge and interrogating him.
Lawyer appearing on behalf of the CID, Rushki Habeeb stated that the Colombo Criminal Division has produced a senior officer of the Intelligence Unit for allegedly kidnapping and threatening a suspect who is connected to the killing of Lasantha Wickremetunge and he was directed to the CID to be interrogated under detention orders for 24 hours. The lawyer further stated that the suspect will be produced before an open court tomorrow; and if there is a need for an identification parade, the Court ordered today that the facts regarding such a move to be provided.
However, she further explained that there seems to be an attempt to expose some of the senior members of the intelligence unit and to create a link between them and this case.
